How the counts are made
A word is a run of characters separated by whitespace. Characters with spaces include every symbol you typed, including spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces drop any whitespace. Lines follow the line breaks in the box. A paragraph is a block of text separated by a blank line.
Reading time is an estimate at 200–250 words per minute. That range is a common band for silent reading of plain prose. Short notes may show “under 1 min.” The result is not a claim about how long any one person will need.
When this tool helps
Use the word counter when a form, a caption, or an assignment asks for a word or character limit. The numbers update while you edit, so you can cut or add text without leaving the page. Copy places a short list on the clipboard if you need to paste the counts into a note. The tool does not score style. The last text can stay in this browser so you can come back; Clear or “Clear saved drafts” on the home page removes it.
Questions
Are spaces counted as characters?
Yes, in the “with spaces” total. The second line reports characters after whitespace is removed.
How are hyphenated words counted?
A hyphen inside a token does not split the word. The hyphenated form “well-known” counts as one word.
Does the text leave this tab?
No. The counts are computed in the browser from the box you see.
